T
he 2014-15 contract negotiations between the ILWU and PMA lasted far
longer than anticipated. Resulting disruptions caused collateral damage to the
shipping community, the broader public and – critically – the reputation of West
Coast ports. Now that cargo is once again moving freely, reliable and efficient
operations will be critical as the West Coast seeks to retain its standing as the top
choice for goods sent to and from Asia.
The following section takes a closer look at the contract, as well as several key issues
that emerged – in particular, the importance of keeping health care costs in check
and the need to foster a productive, stable waterfront.
