PACIFIC MARITIME ASSOCIATION 27 2 0 2 5 | A Y E A R I N R E V I E W New Training Equipment Deployed Across the Coast PMA deployed new training equipment up and down the coast in 2025, including crane simulators, cargo-handling equipment, and semi- tractors. As equipment continues to advance, updated simulators are critical to preparing longshoremen to operate modern machinery safely and effectively. Specific upgrades included a new reach stacker and top pick in Tacoma to support training for new operators and an electric semi-tractor at the Los Angeles/Long Beach training site. With eight training sites in operation coastwide, maintaining current training equipment remains a strategic priority for PMA. LTIR Hits Record Low in 2025 Injuries on the dock decreased in 2025, and the coastwide lost- time injury and illness rate (LTIR) fell to 2.20, the lowest rate on record for PMA. The rate declined from 3.03 in 2024, as longshore workers and foremen recorded fewer lost time injuries. Notably, the LTIR has declined more than 74% since 2002, when it was 8.50. NMSA Person of the Year The National Maritime Safety Association (NMSA) Board of Directors selected Stephanie Bishop of PMA member company SSA Conventional as the 2025 Person of the Year. NMSA honored her at the organization's annual meeting in New Orleans, citing her dedication to improving safety on the docks. As Vice President of Safety for SSA Conventional, Bishop served on the NMSA Technical Committee, the working arm of marine terminal operations safety for NMSA and currently serves on NMSA's Board of Directors. "Over the course of her career, Stephanie has earned the respect of both employers and the union for her strategic and no-nonsense approach to safety in operations and she's been an influential mentor and leader at NMSA and SSA nationwide," NMSA said in its presentation to Bishop.
