Terminal 6 Container Service Preserved in Portland In December, PMA member company Harbor Industrial Services reached a framework agreement with the Port of Portland to become the long-term operator of Terminal 6, preventing the potential closure of Oregon's only international container terminal. Earlier in the year, the Port of Portland had announced that container services at Terminal 6 would cease due to operating losses and financial constraints. But citing the terminal's importance for local businesses and jobs, state officials later pledged funding to continue operations. Terminal 6 plays an important role connecting the regional economy with international trade while also supporting over 1,500 direct and indirect jobs in the region. Seattle Cruise Business Holds Firm, Goes Greener The Port of Seattle, the region's most active homeport, had 276 vessel calls during the 2024 cruise season, as the recovery from the downturn during COVID-19 continues. The Port of Seattle enhanced its role as one of the most environmentally friendly cruise homeports, celebrating in 2024 the installation of shore power at Pier 66, the last of the Port's cruise berths to be equipped with shore power. Shoreside power allows ships to plug into the local grid and turn off fuel-based engines. Investments by shipping companies in more sustainable ships and by shoreside facilities in greener equipment have reduced cruise-related carbon emissions.
