Dangers of Open Access Covers on Container Vessels Longshore Safety Tip October - 2022 ILWU - PMA PACIFIC COAST MARINE SAFETY COMMITTEE DEDICATED TO SAFETY Every year, serious injuries occur when longshore workers fall through open access covers atop catwalks and lashing bridges Longshore workers are reminded to close access covers when working on catwalks and in lashing bays Workers should report to supervision any damaged or unsafe access covers A Safety Tip bulletin highlighting the danger of open access covers. Safety Flyers The dangers of working around open access covers on container ships was a major topic of discussion this year in safety meetings. Each year, workers are injured by falling through open access covers. A Safety Tip flyer highlighting the danger of open access covers and outlining injury prevention methods was developed and distributed to every worker on the Coast.
