2012
The Year
In Review
W
ith the nation focused on everything from a presidential election to Superstorm
Sandy, 2012 was an eventful year. The economy continued its slow recovery,
while uncertainty about the future proved to be a drag on growth. These mixed signals
were reflected on the waterfront, where an increase in container traffic was offset by
slight decreases in other types of cargo.
Yet taken as part of the bigger picture, these totals represented a tremendous
achievement: nearly one million tons of cargo moved through West Coast ports each
day, and volume totals neared their pre-recession highs. Looking ahead, there is every
reason to believe the future on the waterfront is bright.
